The Rotary Club of Portsmouth North hosts The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth

On 23 April 2026 the Rotary Club of Portsmouth North proudly hosted the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson CBE and the Lady Mayoress at the Langstone Quays Resort Hotel Hayling Island.

Councillor Vernon-Jackson was elected Lord Mayor in May 2025 – the 98^th incumbent of the post. He led Portsmouth City Council for 15 years and has been a councillor in the city for over 20 years. Closely involved with the local community, he was instrumental in saving both the Kings Theatre and the New Theatre Royal from closure. He also worked closely with the Portsmouth FC supporter trust to support their purchase of the club and save it from being liquidated.

His visit to Rotary came just 2 days after Portsmouth celebrated its centenary, marking 100 years since it was officially granted city status. Portsmouth’s centenary festivities reflect the community’s resilience and unity, with events ranging from cultural exhibitions to lively street parades. As Portsmouth looks forward to its future, the centenary serves as a moment to honour its achievements and inspire the next generation to continue shaping the city’s unique character.

Each year the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth works to raise funds for local charities. For 2025-2026 the Lord Mayor chose to raise funds for the small local charities and good causes in Portsmouth that often get overlooked. His aim was to raise £50,000 over the year so that he could donate 50 local charities and good causes £1,000 each. In support of this ambition, the President of Portsmouth North Rotary presented the Lord Mayor with a cheque for £500.
