Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner- Donna Jones

The Rotary Club of Portsmouth North was recently privileged to welcome as their guest the Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones.

Donna has a long and distinguished career as a Portsmouth City Councillor and was Leader of the Council for 4 years until 2021. She was then elected as Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner and was subsequently re-elected in 2024. She was the youngest member of the judiciary in England and Wales when appointed to be a magistrate in 2005.

The Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) plays a pivotal role in shaping the safety and wellbeing of communities across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Elected every four years, the Commissioner is entrusted with setting the strategic direction for Hampshire Constabulary, listening to residents’ concerns, and consulting with community groups and local councils. This collaborative approach helps to identify and address pressing issues such as violent crime, anti-social behaviour, drug misuse, and road safety.

The PCC’s responsibilities extend beyond law enforcement, encompassing budget oversight, setting the council tax precept, and ensuring efficient use of resources. Crucially, the Commissioner holds the Chief Constable to account, guaranteeing the police force maintains high standards of integrity and professionalism. By commissioning support services for victims and vulnerable groups, and advocating for innovative approaches like restorative justice, the PCC strives to create safer, more cohesive communities for all.

Donna attended dinner with Members and their wives at the Langstone Quays Resort Hotel on Hayling Island. She gave her audience a fascinating talk and a welcome insight into the complex role of the Commissioner. In March 2025, Donna announced her plans to run to be the first directly elected Mayor of Hampshire and the Solent – an ambition which rests on the Government’s decision to go ahead with these elections..
